Gold Coast SUNS v St Kilda, Metricon Stadium – The Kokoda Challenge – Sydney Comedy Festival Showcase

Ah, the gorgeous Gold Coast! From happening hipster hangouts to sandy golden beaches and a distinctly chilled coastal Queensland vibe, it’s the holiday haven you’ve been waiting for!

Case in point: Burleigh Heads – home to Gemini Court Holiday Apartments – a vibrant beachside mecca, boasting some of the best surf in Australia, a friendly local atmosphere, and pristine views to boot.

The best views on the coast - Gemini Court Holiday ApartmentsPlus, this July there’s a bunch of interesting events happening within a short drive of our stellar location, including the inspirational Kokoda Challenge and acclaimed Sydney Comedy Festival Showcase. You’ll also have the opportunity to catch an AFL match at Metricon Stadium, as our hometown heroes, Gold Coast SUNS, take on St Kilda on July 2.

Firstly, starting a short drive up the road from Burleigh Heads at Mudgeeraba, The Kokoda Challenge will storm into the city on July 16, from 7am.  Hailed as Australia’s toughest team endurance event, it measures in at more than 96km and is often recognised as Australia’s toughest team endurance event. The challenge is a gruelling, cross country team hike over 96km – but with a 39 hour time limit.

Organiser say these numbers hold special significance in Kokoda history, as 96km is the exact length of the Kokoda Track in PNG and the time limit of 39 hours stands in honour of the 39th Militia, who were the first Australian force to engage with the Japanese in Papua New Guinea in World War Two.

Each team of four participants (with a Support Crew) trek the course along fire trails, crossing 12 creeks and climbing summits of 5000m of vertical elevation. The goal is to finish as a complete team of four in honour of the spirit forged on the Kokoda Track in 1942: courage, endurance, mateship and sacrifice. The Kokoda Challenge

Money raised by the challenge goes towards The Kokoda Challenge Youth Program, which helps disenfranchised teenagers improve their lot in life, while giving back to their communities.

To register for the life-changing event, visit www.kokodachallengeevents.com.

Meanwhile, if you’re staying locally later in the month, the Sydney Comedy Festival Showcase will be performing at Paradise Showroom, at The Arts Centre Gold Coast on July 31.

This will be the fourth year in a row the festival will be bringing the ‘crème de la crème’ of the Festival right to the Gold Coast, and it’s looking like the most exciting showing yet.Comedy Festival Showcase at The Arts Centre Gold Coast

Organisers say the Comedy Festival Showcase will boast a line-up of the best local and international comics, while also showcasing some of the freshest emerging talents. The 2015 Showcase Tour put smiles on the faces of 20,000 people in more than 45 regional and metro centres over a huge five month tour, performing many sold out shows.

To book your tickets, ranging from $32 to $35, visit theartscentregc.com.au.

Early in July, on the 2nd, local AFL fans will take some time out to enjoy a match-up between Gold Coast SUNS and St Kilda. Top tip: You should too, footy fan or not.

Even if you’ve only got a passing interest in the sport, our great local facilities make spectating a pretty pleasurable experience. The buzzing atmosphere alone is enough to encourage a visit.

Fan reviews for Metricon Stadium stand at about 4/5 on Ticketmaster, indicating a viewing experience well above average, and a perfect spot to experience your first taste of the Australian game.

Blues on Broadbeach funThis year’s festival will be held from May 19 to 22 and it features an impressive line-up, including The Bamboos, Big Daddy Wilson, Alex Hahn & The Blue Riders, Chase the Sun, Three Kings and many more soulful acts jamming out over six varied stages in the middle of Broadbeach’s trendy leisure and dining district.

Gold Coast International Marine Expo,                          May 21 – 24-May

If a day out by the water is more your style, the Gold Coast International Marine Expo, situated a short drive away from Gemini Court at Gold Coast Marine Precinct, Coomera, will likely fit the bill. The expo will be held from May 19 to 22, coinciding with Blues on Broadbeach.

Gold Coast International Marine ExpoThis year’s event will introduce indoor Shell Scheme Booths, housed within a large 10m x 20m marquee, for exhibitors requiring full indoor protection. Whether you’re a boating enthusiast, or just curious about marine craft, the expo will definitely be worth a look. As a bonus, the expo is a big supporter of local charities, with its widespread donations topping well over $68,000 to date.

The Boat Show With So Much More'While organisation is still underway for this year’s event, we can get a pretty good idea of what’s in store by taking a look at last year’s event. One of the more curious stop-offs at the 2015 boat show was the Notorious Pirate Ship, a painstaking, rare replica of a 15th century Portuguese caravel. It’s one-of-a-kind in the Southern Hemisphere and it was a thrill for the young and young-at-heart to take a look at the quirky vessel.

Last year also featured the Supertank Fishing Show and Super 60s Multihull Showcase, while the Fishing Show provided a unique fisheye look at underwater life (and a glimpse at the latest fishing gear).

The Southport Yacht Club Funsail also offers kids the opportunity to hit the water and test out their sea legs in a safe environment.

Tickets to the Gold Coast Marine Expo are available online, but you can also pay at the gate.

Coinciding with the Expo will be the Marine Sanctuary Cove show, showcasing over 500 boats at Marine Village, Sanctuary Cove, including the latest lines.

It will feature an array of exclusive conferences, boating demonstrations and more.

Cooly Rocks On is generally free, but tickets to indoor shows will be available at www.coolyrockson.com, where you can also find more information.

Now, let’s take a look at the biggest free music festival in Australia; Blues on Broadbeach, which has often been described as a Gold Coast institution since it first started 14 years ago, back in May, 2002.

This year’s festival features a particularly impressive line-up, complete with The Bamboos, Big Daddy Wilson, Alex Hahn & The Blue Riders, Chase the Sun, Three Kings and many more great acts jamming out over six colourful stages in the middle of Broadbeach’s fashionable leisure and dining district.
