Blues on Broadbeach Festival – Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show – Cooly Rocks On – Broadbeach Country Music Festival

For a top holiday spot on the Gold Coast, you can’t go past beautiful Burleigh Heads.

The pretty beachside suburb boasts some of the region’s trendiest events and venues right on its doorstep, and it’s just a short drive from the best the coast has to offer.

Gemini Court Holiday Apartments, located in Hayle Street, features luxury accomodation right in the heart of all of the action.
Blues on Broadbeach Festival,                                               May 21 – 24

Firstly, let’s take a look at the biggest free music festival in Australia; Blues on Broadbeach, a popular, free event which has been running since May, 2002.

Blues on Broadbeach funThis year’s festival will be held from May 19 to 22 and it features an impressive line-up, including The Bamboos, Big Daddy Wilson, Alex Hahn & The Blue Riders, Chase the Sun, Three Kings and many more soulful acts jamming out over six varied stages in the middle of Broadbeach’s trendy leisure and dining district.

Blues on Broadbeach has proven to be a very safe and pleasant event year on year,  offering all the amenities you’d expect at a major music festival, all for free.

For more information about Blues on Broadbeach check out bluesonbroadbeach.com online.

Gold Coast International Marine Expo,                          May 21 – 24-May

If a day out by the water is more your style, the Gold Coast International Marine Expo, situated a short drive away from Gemini Court at Gold Coast Marine Precinct, Coomera, will likely fit the bill. The expo will be held from May 19 to 22, coinciding with Blues on Broadbeach.

Gold Coast International Marine ExpoThis year’s event will introduce indoor Shell Scheme Booths, housed within a large 10m x 20m marquee, for exhibitors requiring full indoor protection. Also new will be the Sea Trial Berths, offering an exclusive area for exhibitors to undertake sea trials during Expo.

New precincts are also being planned to showcase like-minded exhibitors, such as engines and fishing equipment.

‘The Boat Show With So Much More’ is Australia’s only ‘working boat show’ and it attracts large crowds of enthusiastic visitors from across the country, and across the world. Whether you’re a boating enthusiast, or just curious about marine craft, the expo will definitely be worth a look. As a bonus, the expo is a big supporter of local charities, with its widespread donations topping well over $68,000 to date.

The Boat Show With So Much More'While organisation is still underway for this year’s event, we can get a pretty good idea of what’s in store by taking a look at last year’s event. One of the more curious stop-offs at the 2015 boat show was the Notorious Pirate Ship, a painstaking, rare replica of a 15th century Portuguese caravel. It’s one-of-a-kind in the Southern Hemisphere and it was a thrill for the young and young-at-heart to take a look at the quirky vessel.

Last year also featured the Supertank Fishing Show and Super 60s Multihull Showcase, while the Fishing Show provided a unique fisheye look at underwater life (and a glimpse at the latest fishing gear).

The Southport Yacht Club Funsail also offers kids the opportunity to hit the water and test out their sea legs in a safe environment.

Tickets to the Gold Coast Marine Expo are available online, but you can also pay at the gate.

Coinciding with the Expo will be the Marine Sanctuary Cove show, showcasing over 500 boats at Marine Village, Sanctuary Cove, including the latest lines.

It will feature an array of exclusive conferences, boating demonstrations and more.

Visit sanctuarycoveboatshow.com.au online for more information.

Cooly Rocks On,                                                                          May 29 – June 8

While holidaying in Burleigh Heads, you might be lucky enough to catch the Cooly Rocks On 50s and 60s nostalgia festival, which features as the biggest event of its kind in Australia. It will be held from June 3 to 13, a short drive down the Pacific Motorway in the border town of Coolangatta. Last year about 100,000 people attended the free event and organisers expect numbers could surpass that this year.

Cooly Rock on

Attractions at the festival include an impressive car show, comprising more than 1300 hot rods and other classic and custom cars. You’ll also discover lots of vintage and modern day motorbikes, ranging from choppers to sports bikes.

The festival also includes a variety of rock and roll, rockabilly and swing-based entertainment, from official stages, to loosely organised street dances and fancy dress parties. More than 50 local, national and international bands are expected to perform and the streets come alive with 50s and 60s dancers taking advantage of the occasion.

Attendees can expect numerous shows, displays, competitions, parades, carnival rides and Gold Coast Cooly Rocks Oncompetitions. The star of the show is usually the 1300-strong Grand Finale Parade – always an awe-inspiring sight, and one children in particular won’t soon forget. Cooly Rocks On 2016 will also include a surf themed market and heaps of other great entertainment at the Kirra Surf Precinct, just north of the main proceedings in Coolangatta and Tweed Heads (northern New South Wales, just south of the border).

Cooly Rocks On coincides with the QLD Mal Festival, which promotes longboard surfing, and the precinct features a Show n Shine, with a selection of the finest iconic surf vehicles, including Kombis, panel vans, Woodies and utes, entertainment at the precinct’s Kirra Surf stage and rides operating for the kids. There’s also a Family Precinct located in Jack Evans Boat Harbour in Tweed Heads, which will keep kids occupied with a range of events throughout Cooly Rocks On.

QLD Mal Festival longboard surfingMany participants in the car show and dance aspects of the festival tend to get heavily into the nostalgia-driven spirit, with vintage costumes the order of the day.

And if all that wasn’t quite enough, there’ll also be an array of vintage-styled food and drink on offer, as well as over 200 retro market and craft stalls.

Cooly Rocks On is generally free, but tickets to indoor shows will be available at www.coolyrockson.com, where you can also find more information.

Broadbeach Country Music Festival,                                           June 17 – June 19

A little later in the month, from June 17 to 19, the Broadbeach Country Music Festival will be held, of course, in the heart of Broadbeach. The festival began in 2013 and last year’s event attracted more than 35,000 visitors. It’s a rather unique affair, blending stetsons and steel guitars with surfboard and boardshorts in typical Gold Coast fashion.

This year’s festival headliner will be Adam Brand & The Outlaws, backed up by The Sunny Cowgirls, Jasmine Rae, Adam Eckersley Band, Deep Creek Road, Bill Chambers and Caitlyn Shadbolt, among many others. For more information about Broadbeach Country Music Festival visit broadbeachcountry.com.

Burleigh ProAs a bonus, Bleach* Festival coexists with the annual launch of the World Surfing Tour, the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro. In its own right, the WSL competitions offers more than enough of an incentive to stay locally. Bleach* is the irresistible icing on the cake, really.

Bleach

You’ll be situated a short drive from all of the best Bleach* events and, of course, an extensive array of other great attractions, including Australia’s best theme parks, world-class dining and leisure precincts and a distinctly laid back ambience you’ll struggle to find anywhere else.

Really, Bleach* Festival is a great example of this casual atmosphere in action.

A chaotic affair, the annual event impresses year on year with its thought-provoking displays and off-the-wall acts. It’s something different entirely, and an experience well worth undertaking, whether you’ve got the kids in tow, or you’re taking in the sights solo. The festival’s organisers describe Bleach* as a travelling road show, a festival and a canvas for Gold Coast culture. Honestly, the description rings true.

As a welcome bonus, many of the festival’s activities, musical acts and art installations are located outdoors, along Currumbin Beach and other waterside locations scattered across the Gold Coast’s sunny shores. You couldn’t ask for a better backdrop, really.

Bleach Ted Grambeau

As an example of what’s in store for Bleach* 2016, let’s take a quick look back at last year’s offering, which was extensive, to say the least.

Held from March 6, and opened with a cracker launch at Coolangatta and Kirra, complete with a huge costumed mullet meet and greet (yes, you heard right…), a show by THE ANTS and a striking Indigenous performance, recognising the Aboriginal owners of the Gold Coast.

Also held across the weekends were silent film nights, public picnics, complete with live entertainment, and Sequins and Sinew; a sensational combination of acrobatics, aerial arts and dance.

Additionally, art exhibitions are an integral part of Bleach*, with first-class examples of local talent, and works from farther afield, available to peruse largely at your leisure. As mentioned, a number of the installations are located outdoors, taking advantage of breathtaking scenery.

Meanwhile, just up the road at Tugun (near Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary) the Tooloona Street Festival served up a storm in 2015. The street festival featured food stalls, live music, cooking demonstrations, local restaurants and an array of cool kid’s workshops to keep the little ones happy.

Really though, it’s difficult to highlight what could and should be on at Bleach* 2016 – the event evolves year on year and its likely March will host a number of exciting new surprises.

Check www.bleachfestival.com.au for more information about the festival, which is an initiative of Connecting Southern Gold Coast.

If you’re aching to escape from the daily grind, you can’t go past the Gold Coast this December. Featuring some of the world’s best beaches, and a huge array of awesome activities, the sun-soaked tourist mecca offers a slice of paradise for your summer escape.

Even better, the Gold Coast stretches beyond its postcard-perfect beaches – venture into the Gold Coast Hinterland for stunning views and a fascinating look at ancient remnant rainforest.

And I haven’t even touched on the region’s booming number of top-notch restaurants, cafes, trendy bars and excellent shopping venues.

Really, the Gold Coast has got it all – and with a decidedly laid back atmosphere.

The top-rated Gemini Court Holiday Apartments, located in beautiful Burleigh Heads, offers easy access to all the Gold Coast has to offer. Whether you’re booking your annual family holiday, organising a romantic escape or envisioning your next surf safari, you’ll find it hard to scope out a comfier homebase.

Christmas Shopping at Harbour Town
If you do decide to stay locally (smart idea!) you’ll probably want to check out the Christmas deals at Harbour Town at Biggera Waters. Not far from Gemini Court, the shopping centre features a huge array of factory direct outlets and specialty stores, as well as your expected shopping centre staples, the sizeable outdoor locale is always a popular destination for price-concious locals, and tourists alike.

Harbour Town

Whether it’s half-price shoes and clothing, the coolest new gadgets, or something special for your partner, there’s always a great selection of stuff to browse through at Harbour Town.

As a bonus, if you want to stop for a spot of lunch while shopping, there’s heaps of great restaurants serving a huge array of dishes. You’re bound to find something tasty to tuck into.

Thankfully, the centre’s intelligent open design really cuts down on the Christmas shopping claustrophobia – it eases crowds and provides a great place to bag a bargain in the busiest time of the year for Gold Coast retailers.

Harbour Town’s located a short drive from Burleigh Heads and it’s easily accessible by public transport.

The Green Behind the Gold

Also close by, Burleigh Heads National Park and the Gold Coast Hinterland offer popular tourist destinations such as Purling Brook Falls, Best of All Lookout, Glow Worm Tours, the Natural Bridge and much more.Natural Arch

In and of itself, Burleigh National Park is a tempting proposition.

The park is a wild, native headland which features relaxed walks along rocky foreshores and relaxed rainforests, and the chance to see sea-eagles soaring along the coast. At Burleigh Head, where old volcanic columns meet the sea, the park boasts rainforest, eucalypt forest, pandanus groves, tussock grassland, coastal heath and mangroves. And on its north side is one of Australia’s most famous surfing point breaks.Tallebudgera

Make sure to check out the Walk the Ocean view walk around the headland from Tallebudgera Creek and inspect the masses of six-sided basalt columns. Or you could picnic on Burleigh foreshore or relax on Echo Beach. The choices are endless, and the gorgeous Gold Coast Hinterland stretches on for kilometre after kilometre.Keep Calm Carols
