While the Gold Coast is famous for its iconic beaches, but don’t forget the green behind the gold on your next holiday. While most people stick to the beaches and tourist attractions, you’ll see a different side of the coast if you head up into the mountains.

Mt Tamborine Skywalk

Mt Tamborine Skywalk

Mt Tamborine Skywalk
For a truly spectacular view, why not walk the Mt Tamborine Skywalk. It’ll take you around 45 mins for this easy walk featuring 300 meters of steel bridges through the highest parts of the canopy, a 40 metre lookout that soars a breathtaking 30 metres above the creek and forest. The walk is 1.5kms and also features sections along the forest floor – it’s a fairly easy stroll through the forest so will suit most fitness levels.

Mt Tamborine Lookouts
There are dozens of lookouts along the mountain range, some simply require a short stroll, others are a more intense – both kinds offer a diverse range of scenery from waterfalls to caves, rainforest foliage to the more quintessential Australian forest.

Why not go for a stroll through Mt. Tamborine, eat some freshly made fudge, and wander through quirky shops and cafes. When you’re done go for a walk through the rainforest. There are so many different tracks to walk, you can have a lazy stroll to a look out, or enjoy a full hike. There is something to suit everyone.

Glow Worms
While you’re up in the mountains why not check out the Glow Worms? There are two options, you can view them in their natural habitat at Natural Bridge – you’ll want to bring a torch and sturdy shoes as it gets very dark and there are plenty of stairs. You’ll need to visit at night and there are tours that can take you.

Glow Worm Caves in Mt Tamborine

Alternatively, you can check out the Glow Worm Caves at Mt. Tamborine – although they are housed – this is the easiest way to see them, and you can visit during the day. For an added bonus you can find them here all year round – unlike at Natural Bridge where they are only visible during certain seasons.

Fishing at Tallebudgera Creek

Fishing at Tallebudgera Creek

For the days when you want to relax why not try your hand at fishing in Tallebudgera Creek. Tallebudgera translates into ‘good fishing’ in the indigenous language – so you know it’s a good fishing spot! Pick up a cheap rod and line, and enjoy some quiet time with the family.

This beautiful location is the perfect spot for a picnic, a quick dip, or to simply throw in a line and watch the boats and beautiful scenery (hopefully you’ll catch a fish or two). Stand Up Paddle Boarding, Rock Pools and Sunday Nights at Burleigh

Burleigh Heads is the place to be if you are looking for a relaxing Gold Coast getaway, far enough away from the hustle and bustle to enjoy the things the locals love best, and close enough to still enjoy the usual tourist attractions and have a blast. Perhaps you’re keen to try Stand Up Paddle boarding, want to go for a lovely picnic or swim at the Currumbin rock pools or to experience the wonder that is Sunday Nights at Burleigh where the fire twirlers show off, and the tribal drums play.

Stand Up Paddle Boarding
Stand Up Paddle Boarding is such a fun experience, and perfect for all ages. The boards are large and make it easy to keep your balance. It’s a truly unique way to explore the beautiful Gold Coast. The closest place to go (and the local favourite) is to visit Tallebudgera Creek, just on the other side of the headland.

Stand Up Paddle Boarding

Stand Up Paddle Boarding

The coastal creek is a perfect place for a picnic or a quick dip – but while you’re here, try your hand at SUP, as it’s affectionately known. There are a number of local hire places, but check with us at reception before you book anything as we will be able to point you in the right direction. The best time to go is earlier in the morning, as it can get a little more difficult as the tide starts to come in – so be sure to check the tides with your hire company before you book and leave.

Currumbin Rock Pools
The Currumbin Rock Pools are one of the best-kept secrets on the coast, be sure to ask around for people’s favourite spots – there are some less well known spots around  – they just require a bit more of a hunt to find them.  The main set of rock pools are just a short drive from Burleigh – a quick walk down a path and you’ll see the most popular pools. Enjoy a picnic on the banks, have a swim and just enjoy a day out in nature.  The perfect spot if it gets a little too hot and crowded on the beaches, or you want to have a nice relaxing picnic by the water with the protection of the trees and forest.

Sunday Nights at Burleigh
You haven’t truly experienced Burleigh unless you have been witness to a Sunday night Fire Twirlersbeachside. In the park by the beach, Sunday nights are where people come out to play. You’ll find fire twirlers, people singing and dancing, musicians jamming, hula hooping and slack lining (similar to a tightrope). You can just watch or be as involved as you like. It’s a memorable occasion and one we are lucky enough to have on nearly every Sunday (weather is usually the only factor in a quiet or cancelled event).

Burleigh Heads has one of the finest dining precincts on the coast, with so many options from casual take away fish and chips to eat by the beach to 5 star restaurants, and one of the most beautiful beaches on the Gold Coast, it is the best place to stay.

Experience an incredible display of over 50 sculptures from local, national and international artists. Held along the spectacular Currumbin coastline you can visit the art installations at all hours of the day – it’s highly recommended you visit at sunrise or sunset as the lighting adds to the wonder of the displays.  Some of the sculptures are even lit which adds to the nighttime experience!

In addition to the sculptures, you can also take part in adult or children’s workshops, vote in the art competition, enjoy the musical acts and even meet with some of the artists.  Enjoy a wonderful stroll along the beach while taking in the art, and if you have kids, you can let them play in the sand while you admire the sculptures.
